Pavilion Site
These cottages on Argyle Street at the corner of Mackinlay Street were demolished to make way for the building of the new Pavilion, opened in 1938. The fence on the left bordered the Grand Marine Hotel and can still be seen today. There had been another place of entertainment called the Pavilion in Montague Street which had opened in 1910 as a very large roller skating rink, a popular craze at the time. After this craze died out the building became a theatre and then a cinema.
The main hall supposedly could accommodate 4000 people. The site is still there, the entrance would have been where the Bike Shed is today and extended back into where the SSE yard is at the back. (Rothesay), (P03-2157, B11-7)
