The Albert Memorial Fountain was erected at the foot of Bishop Street in 1863 to commemorate the death of Prince Albert and was paid financed by public subscription. By the end of the 1940s due to an increase in vehicular traffic it was felt that the fountain was causing an obstruction and the spray being blown from it in windy weather was dangerous.
The fountain was demolished in May 1947 though at a council meeting later that month there was some debate as to who had actually authorised its removal. (Rothesay) (P03-2273, B12.10)
