Description: A clay mould used to cast spear-butts. A spear-butt was made of metal and was placed over the end of the wooden shaft of the spear to give it extra strength. Two moulds for the manufacture of knobbed spear-butts were found at Dunagoil of two different types – the doorknob and the Lisnacrogher. It is probable that these types had developed in Ireland and spread to Scotland. The Lisnacrogher is  particularly rare.

Origin: The mould was found during the excavation of the Iron Age hill fort at Dunagoil, at the south end of Bute. Excavations took place between 1913-15 and 1919 under the direction of Ludovic Mann. Transaction of BNHS Vol VIII and IX.
