Object: Silver Groat

Description: A Scottish silver groat from the reign of Robert II. Minted in Edinburgh. The groat was worth
fourpence.
Origin: Robert II succeeded his Uncle, David II, to become King of Scots in 1371. He reigned until 1390.
Robert II spent a lot of time in his castle in Rothesay, visiting particularly in May. Royal accounts from the
time record provisions and wine being sent there for the King’s use. Robert II’s grandson David became
the first Duke of Rothesay in 1398. Coin donated.
