Object: Rothesay Communion Token
Date: 18th century
Description: Communion Token with ‘Ro’ for Rothesay and the date 1703. Although it is known that communion tokens were in use by the end of the 17th century, the earliest token known to exist for Rothesay Parish is this one. It is blank on the back. The Kirk Session decided who should or should not receive a token.
Origin: The Museum holds a collection of communion tokens for Rothesay Parish. Later tokens have the word ‘Rothsay’ (sic) replacing the Ro. By 1840 the token is stamped on both sides and has a text on it.
