Description : Pointing Porters
The pointing porters were a Rothesay tradition, plying their trade on Rothesay Pier. A bargain was struck to carry passenger luggage from the boat to the guest house by the mean of pointing. This card is obviously an early selfie as the couple have had their portraits taken while on holiday and attached them to the card to personalize it. Sadly we don’t know who they are but the card was franked 31 July 1903 and sent to a Mr D. Kinnaird who worked for Smith, Sons & Laughland, Silk Mercers, Family Drapers, Clothiers, Hosiers, Glovers, Furriers, Shirtmakers, and Complete Outfitters, Carpet Factors, Household Furnishers, and General Warehousemen in Mitchell Street, Glasgow. Could it be that one or both of the young people in the photos also worked for this business? (P20-0024, A4.322), (Rothesay Pier)
