Description: A substantial padlock with its original key from the Tolbooth in Rothesay. The Tolbooth was the main municipal building in a Scottish burgh and would have a meeting room, courthouse and a jail. The second Rothesay Tolbooth was built in 1614, a bell-house was added in 1688 and the building was demolished in 1827
Origin: The Tolbooth stood across from the castle near the present junction of High Street and Castle Street. The Mercat Cross stood nearby.
