Object: Mineral Well

Description : The Mineral Well was situated on the foreshore between Albany Road and Wellpark Road.  Its waters were considered beneficial in the treatment of a variety of disorders, especially skin and glandular complaints, either taken internally or as a bath.  It was in use as early as the 1850s but by 1870 it was in a poor state of repair with a letter in the Buteman complaining of the ingress of seawater carrying seaweed and other detritus.  A pavilion was erected over the well in 1890 but by 1911 due to building work being carried out nearby the spring disappeared and by 1921 the town council decided to remove the pavilion and it was dismantled in 1921.  This photograph was taken around 1897.
