In 1882 horse drawn trams were introduced to Bute running from Guildford Square to Port Bannatyne, the journey taking 30 minutes. The line was electrified in 1902 and the journey time reduced to 15 minutes. By 1905 it was decided to extend the line to Ettrick Bay where on the straight sections speeds up to 25 m.p.h. could be achieved. The line continued to be popular especially with holiday makers travelling to the beach and the entertainments laid on at Ettrick Bay until the 1930s when there was fierce competition with the buses. Passenger numbers on the trams declined and the trams were withdrawn. This photograph shows the departure of the last official tram from the corner of Victoria Street and High Street at 5pm on the 30 September 1936. It was not the very last tram as this left Guildford Square at 11 pm that night on the final journey to the Pointhouse depot. A large crowd was there to say farewell. (P03-3185, B21.15)
