Object: Food Vessel

Description: Food vessel made of a fairly hard grey fabric. It has a smoothed interior and six lugs which are functional for joining the base to the wall of the pot. The rim is bevelled and there are incised lines all over the pot which are more distinct above the lugs. The interior diameter is 10.5 cms. It was found upside down and intact in the axial chamber of Glenvoidean Neolithic Burial Cairn, Isle of Bute. Several other vessels were found in the same chamber. The pot has been dated to around 3000 BC

Origin: Glenvoidean Neolithic Cairn was excavated by Dorothy Marshall and Isabel Taylor in the 1960s. Glenvoidean lies 300m above sea level on Kilmichael farmland at the north end of Bute.
