Object: Chess Piece
Date: Medieval
Description: A bone abstract chess piece, probably a knight. Chess pieces from Medieval Scotland are rare and are mainly from the west coast. This piece came from Rothesay Castle, which was completely out of use by the end of the 17th c. The 2nd Marquess of Bute began clearing rubbish and repairing the ruins in 1816 and the work was continued by the 3rd Marquess.
Origin: The chess piece was found during the clearing of the moat in 1872.
