Object: Castle Street

Description : This photograph shows that there have not been many changes in the building in Castle Street though the steps outside the Burgh Buildings have disappeared.  These were built at a cost of £4000 and housed the local jail, courthouse as well as county and burgh offices. Many public announcements were made from the top of these steps including Royal proclamations and election results.  An awning would be erected and the local town dignitaries would stand beneath this with several armed soldiers on duty below.   (Rothesay Streets) (P16-0011, B11.81)
