Object: Carved Oak Chair
Date: 19th century
Description: Solid oak chair with heavily carved back, with pierced fretwork in the Gothic style. This is
one of a set of five chairs. A silver plaque on the back reads ‘Presented by the Marquis of Bute to the
Magistrates of Rothesay 1838.’
Origin: The chairs came to the Museum when the Council Chambers closed. Another set of chairs in red
leather, with the crest of Rothesay in gold on the backs, came from the same source.
