Object: Bone Shaker Bicycle

Description: Bone shaker bicycle with iron tyres over wooden wheels. The saddle is also solid iron. Unsurprisingly, the combination of a solid iron bicycle and rough roads earned it the name ‘bone shaker’. The first bicycle of this type appeared in the 1860s. This example has a plate saying ‘Sargent, Champs Elysees 73, Paris’
Origin: The bicycle was bought at a roup (auction) at St Anne’s Lodge Ascog in 1940 and gifted to the Museum.
