Date: 18th Century
Description: Metal Badge inscribed with the words ‘Armed Association 1798’. An Armed Association was formed in 1798 for local defence. The Sheriff Substitute submitted to a meeting of the Lieutenancy the names of 106 men who agreed to be ‘armed, trained and exercised without pay or gratuity for the defence of the island of Bute against invasion and for the purposes of preserving internal peace’
Origin: The company were clothed at a cost of £650, the uniform included this badge
