Identifying male and female squirrels

Identifying male and female squirrels

Watching red squirrels is always a great experience, but being more observant may bring added information.  Hopefully this short video will help.

Stuck Cottage – February 2024

This squirrel at Stuck Cottage is happy to take food placed on the top of a handy log whilst ignoring a squirrel feeder placed very close by. Happily, the log is a wonderful spot for recording a captivating video.  A few days later however, the squirrel feeder was found to be half empty, so presumably the squirrel has figured out how to access the food put out for it there.

Bardarrach – Jan 24

Bardarrach – Jan 24

Currently, Malcolm is busy with lots of planning and map-drawing, which we hope will help our red squirrels in the long term. So, there haven’t been many videos to share, but here’s one from our feeder in Bardarroch Wood, near Loch Fad, captured by trail camera on 12th January. One very contented red squirrel.

Bardarrach update – Oct 23

Its now early October, and the feeder at Bardarrach is continuing to show squirrels present in this area. Barbara reports that the squirrels arrive very soon after she has topped up the feeder, and make significant inroads into the food available in about 3 or 4 days.

Rhubodach Farm – Sept 23

Following up on a sighting of a squirrel at Rhubodach Farm, George put up a feeder and trail cam to capture some footage.  As you can see, a squirrel was indeed present and quick to take advantage of the food put out.

Bardarrach Woods – a return

In August 2023, a feeder was placed back in Bardarrach Woods by Barbara Rimmington to see if there were still squirrels in the area. After a promising start when Barbara was able to report that the feeder was half empty, she was finally able to capture a squirrel feeding from the station. We were all really pleased to see this further evidence of squirrels out with the northern end of the island.

Sometimes our trail cams pick up other wildlife, including these Jays, successfully raiding one of the feeders set up in Lenihuline Woods and checked by Barbara Rimmington.
