Prof Niamh Nic Daeid (Leverhulme Research Center for Forensic Science, University of Dundee)
“Inside Forensic Science”
Niamh is Director of the award-winning Leverhulme Research Centre. She was born in Dundee but grew up in Ireland and studied in Dublin before moving to Strathclyde University, where she became the first woman to be awarded a professorship in Chemistry, and then moved to Dundee in 2014. She has been involved in many international forensic investigations and was an expert witness for the Grenfell Tower public enquiry. She specialises in fire investigation, terrorist events and the illegal manufacturing of drugs. She will talk more generally about the work of the Research Centre and what a career in forensic science involves. She has received a number of awards for her public engagement activities.
After checking that there were no Barristers, ex-police officers or crime writers in the audience, Niamh ( pronounced Neeve) gave a fascinating talk on the work of fact based forensic science and the importance of databases to compare forensic samples.
The next Baird Lecture will be in February. Prof. Colin Campbell (School of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh): “Riding the good vibrations from medicine to music”
