Object: Dobbie and Sons Medal

Description: Medal presented by ‘Dobbie and Co Royal Seed Growers and Florists of Rothesay Scotland’ to G Williamson in 1897.

Origin: James Dobbie moved his family to Rothesay from Renfrew in 1875 to develop his nursery business in what he considered to be a perfect climate for growing plants. His Springfield Nursery was situated off High Street, although had he plots around Rothesay to grow plants without cross-pollination. He retired in 1887 and sold the business. Dobbie’s nursery subsequently moved to a larger site at Dalkeith.
