It is damaged, heavily corroded and the pommel is missing. However, x-rays, taken in 1977, showed markings which were interpreted as an inlay of copper or silver alloy, probably arranged in a chequerboard design.

Origin: The exact circumstances of the finding of the sword (over 100 years ago) are unclear but it was said to have been found in the Drumachloy Burn. It is possible that the burn eroded a Viking burial.

Object: Silver Ingot

Date: Viking

Description: A silver ingot with test marks on it. Ingots were used for trading and were usually cast from small pieces of hacksilver to make them easier to transport. The nicks visible on it are test marks made to satisfy the trader of the quality of the ingot.

Origin: Found by a metal detectorist at Scalpsie

Object: Weight

Date: Viking

Description: Small lead weight, which has been recycled from a Viking brooch. The top of the weight is a section cut from a Viking Tortoise brooch. This type of weight was made in Scandinavia.

Origin: Found in one of two longhouses, the remains of which can be seen at the foot of Little Dunagoil. Excavations took place at Little Dunagoil between 1958 and 1961, under the direction of Dorothy Marshall.
