Object: Agate tools
Date: Neolithic
Description: Three agate scrapers. End scraper 45mm x 25mm tapering to a point. Side scraper 40mm x
25 mm. Side scraper 30mm x 20mm.
Origin: As flint does not occur naturally on Bute, other materials were sourced to make implements.
There are agate-bearing rocks about 400m from St Blanes church and in 1970 Hugh McFadzean
collected material from this area. From 79 specimens collected, Jack Scott identified 22 as worked
implements (now in the Museum collection), the rest was waste material. Transactions BNHS Vol XII
